Bresse and Dombes essentials tour

Soak up these two gourmet countries during your stay in the Ain.

Day 1: In the heart of Bresse

Morning:
Visit to Domaine des Saveurs - Les Planons*.
Take a free tour of the 3,300 m² exhibition hall with its contemporary architecture to discover the rich heritage of Bresse and immerse yourself in the Bresse way of life from the 15th century to the present day. Its collections reveal costumes, enamels, architecture, gastronomy and the world-famous Bresse poultry. Guided tour of the Bresse farmhouse, admirably preserved around its Saracen fireplace (except Tuesdays).

Lunch in a restaurant in or near Bourg-en-Bresse

Afternoon:
Discover the secrets of a flamboyant Gothic jewel... The Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse, built in the 16th century on the orders of Marguerite of Austria, opens its doors to you.
Guided tour of the Eglise de Brou, with its princely tombs, altarpiece, stone rood screen, stalls and three cloisters. Self-guided tour of the museum.

Check-in at the Best Western Hôtel de France 3* in Bourg-en-Bresse.
Dinner at the "Place Bernard" brasserie, owned by Michelin-starred chef Georges Blanc.

Day 2: Fins and wings

Morning:
Guided tour along the flower-bedecked streets of the charming town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne (15th-century covered market, flower-bedecked bridges, half-timbered houses... ). The morning continues with a guided tour of the Dombes ponds. Admire the enchanting landscapes, changing with the seasons.

Stop at the edge of a pond and learn about its fauna, flora, farming and fishing (approx. 30 km with your coach).

Lunch in a restaurant in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne

Afternoon:
The Parc des Oiseaux de Villars-les Dombes invites you on an ornithological and botanical world tour. With 2,500 birds of 300 different species spread over 35 hectares, the Park boasts one of the largest collections in Europe. Watch the birds fly freely through landscaped areas inspired by their native environment, discover the panoramic Tower (height 27m) and don't miss the bird show in flight at 3.30pm, a ballet of color and delicacy! (subject to weather conditions).
