Le marais des Echets

The marsh of Echets is located east of the Commune of Tramoyes, 270 meters in altitude. It is located near Pont Canard river. This glacial depression covering about 1000 hectares used to be a fish-rich lake. It receives the water from Les Echets, Mionnay and Tramoyes. In 1481, Philibert Duke of Savoye , wanted to dry out the lake but the Counts of Lyon opposed this decision. But in 1512, Charles 3 , a successor, put this project into execution. The lake became a grassland where the Duke Charles 3 had a luxurious residence built surrounded by stud farms. Several attempts were made to rehabilitate this marsh which had become the ancient lake but without success. Until now-a-days, a controversy has opposed the supporters of the drainage and those who call for the safeguarding of the site. But eventually, it was dried out in the 15th century which impoverished the flora and the fauna of the site.
